California fairgrounds and venues play a critical role in our state. In addition to serving as safe and fun gathering places for our communities, California fairgrounds and venues have been on the frontlines of major natural disasters that have severely impacted our local communities. As we plan for the future and help prepare our communities for future potential emergencies, our state must adopt the following policies:
Remove Funding Barriers: Update antiquated state codes that limit fairgrounds and venues from accessing state and federal grant opportunities.
Expand Grant Eligibility: Ensure fairgrounds and venues are included in relevant grant programs aimed at disaster preparedness and community resilience.
Infrastructure Improvements: Allocate funding for enhancing the infrastructure of fairgrounds to withstand and respond effectively to natural disasters.
Coordination with Emergency Services: Foster closer collaboration between fairgrounds and venues management and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to develop comprehensive disaster response plans.
